Information for Residents with Well Water Treatment Systems

CT Public Health Code and Technical Standards (Section X) prohibit the discharge of backwash water from ion exchange systems, either cationic (e.g. water softener), or anionic (e.g. radionuclide treatment) to a septic system.  Backwash water is also prohibited from discharging to the ground surface, wetlands, or open watercourse.  Backwash wastewater must discharge to dedicated leaching structures separate from a septic system and a permit is required from the Health Dept. There are specific separation distances from these subsurface structures to a drinking water well and septic systems.  Please contact the Essex Health Dept for guidance and permitting.
