Stormwater

The management of stormwater runoff is at once a simple concept and a complex problem. Stormwater runoff from streets, yards, and parking lots drains into the Essex Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System - a system of catch basins and pipes that drain to local waterways and the Connecticut River. Stormwater can carry debris, dirt and other pollutants which may eventually end up in local waterways or the Connecticut River. Preventing water pollution from stormwater runoff is the concern of the Public Works Department, the Essex Conservation Commission, and the Wetlands Commission.
The Zoning/Wetlands Department provides both technical assistance and regulatory oversight to ensure proper design and construction of stormwater treatment and control practices; and construction-related erosion prevention and sediment control practices - necessary to minimize the potentially adverse impacts of stormwater runoff to receiving waters throughout Essex
The Department of Public Works and the Essex Conservation Commission have published a brochure that provides suggestions for homeowners to avoid contamination of our inland and coastal waters from polluted stormwater runoff. This brochure is available at the Town Hall or can be downloaded by clicking on the link below. Another link below will take you to an article originally published in "Essex Events", which provides more information on the Essex Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System and what is being done in Essex to prevent water pollution from stormwater runoff.
