Child
Safety
Recent
studies have shown that motor vehicle accidents cause more deaths
and injuries than all childhood diseases combined. Approximately
600 children under the age of five are killed each year in this
country while riding in automobiles. Tens of thousands are injured,
and many injuries leave children physically and/or mentally disabled
for life. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,
each day an average of seven children age 14 and under die and another
908 are injured in motor vehicle related crashes.
Any person who transports a
child 4 years of age or younger, weighing less than 40 pounds must
use a child safety seat. If the child is 4 years of age or younger,
but over 40 pounds state law requires that the child should use
an approved child restraint system or a seat safety belt.
State Police recommend that
if a vehicle has a passenger side air bag, that infants or small
children should be placed in the rear seat of the vehicle, in a
child safety seat if needed, or a seat safety belt. Due to the force
released when an airbag is deployed during an accident, statistics
show it is safer for children to be in the back seat of these vehicles.
The Essex Resident Trooper's
Office now offers a Child Safety Seat Clinic by appointment, courtesy
of the Essex Police. To arrange an appointment, please contact Officer
Russell Gingras at 860-399-2111, extension 8073.
